The holocaust has greatly affected our world today. The book is important in society today because it gives people a better understanding of what Jewish people went through during the Holocaust. In my opinion the most valuable idea in the book is that friendship matters. Annemarie Johansen and her family housed Ellen Rosen and her family. The holocaust affects us today because it gave us the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The novel ended towards the time the war ended. Everyone matured and it changed people for the better. Everyone gathered together to celebrate the war ending. This is important because people didn’t have to hide anymore and everyone felt safer than before.

The novel “Number the Stars” is about two girls growing up in 1943, Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen are ten years old, living in Copenhagen, Denmark. Nazi Germany has taken over their country for the past three years. Life has changed a lot for the Johansens and the Rosens since the war started. German soldiers patrol every corner of Copenhagen and everyone is being careful. Germans begin closing Jewish owned businesses. Jewish people were being taken away and put into camps. In these camps they are put to work and there is little to no hospitality given to them. If you defy the rules of a Nazi you are immediately sentenced to death, no matter your reasoning. Due to the Holocaust many people are still affected by it today. Jewish people have spent years trying to rebuild their lives. Many people never met certain members of their families because they were killed in the holocaust. People who aren't Jewish struggle with coping with the fact such an evil man ever walked the earth and ever influenced so much hatred on others. (United States Memorial Holocaust Museum)
My novel is about a young girl who has to take in her best friend due to the Nazis searching for Jewish people to relocate. The struggles the family has to go through to keep Ellen Rosen a secret is a great challenge. The girls live their lives growing up staying clear of soldiers. The Nazis went after Jews wanting to kill them all. Hitler and other Nazis believed that some races are superior to others. They felt threatened by most other races. Nazis took the Jewish people away to "concentration camps" where they were kept until they died. Life was not fair there and many people tried to escape due to the lack of hospitality. Most of the Jewish tried hiding from the Nazis but most were taken away.
Introduction Hunger is a huge problem all around the world. The North Carolina food bank says “One in four children in North Carolina are food insecure.” You are used to having breakfast lunch and dinner everyday, well some people don’t have that chance. Some are given a free and reduced lunch in wake county. In one month in 2017 there were 50,886 kids (wcpss 2017) that used the reduced lunch opportunity. In North Carolina there are almost 630,000 homes without enough to eat (Inter Faith Food Shuttle). We are interested in hunger around North Carolina because too many people die just because they don’t get fed the necessary meals. What do kids do over the summer when they have no school and can’t get a free lunch from school? There are so many organizations open to help the hungry. This doesn't mean people can access them, some have transportation problems, or they don’t know about the organizations. We need to make food more available to people who need it. Society needs to try harder to help the ones in need. We should do more to prevent hunger in this world. It is too hard to buy healthy produce due to the high prices but the worst foods in the markets are also the cheapest ones and for some families, is the only foods that they can afford. Citizens need to see that the world isn't as perfect as it is deemed as, there are extreme problems in this world that can be made better. This is why we are interested in helping the cause. The Issue Hunger in North Carolina has increased drastically, one in four children in North Carolina are food insecure. North Carolina has one of the highest percentages in the United States of children who are food insecure on the daily basis . (hunger in America study 2014)”. “Almost 630,000 north carolina households don’t have enough food to eat” (Inter faith food shuttle) .“North Carolina has the 8th highest rate of food insecurity in the nation (Inter faith food shuttle)”In North Carolina, food insecurity is rapidly on the rise. “Hunger in North carolina has increased from 12.6% to 19.6%” ( in a growing state, growing hunger 2013). “One in four are food insecure in North Carolina” (nc food banks 2018). “The cause of hunger is sometimes National disasters like floods & earthquakes (food world programme 2018)” But other times it’s just because of the lack of jobs. Poverty is also another cause of hunger. Hunger affects the brain function, how can we expect a student to do well in school when they don’t have enough food to it. You can’t do well and get good grades in school when you don’t have any food to eat. Schools give free lunch and breakfast but what about in the summer break, winter break or on the weekends? If we don’t take care of this issue now, more and more kids will be scared and worried about what they are going to eat tonight. This issue is not gonna get fixed by itself we have to do something and do it quick! The Solution Agencies in North Carolina such as Rise Against Hunger and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle help give families who can't get food every day get food by donations. The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle also does a program called BackPack Buddies. BackPack Buddies is designed to provide children from low-income households with 10-12 pounds of nutritious kid friendly groceries for the weekend when free school lunches and breakfasts are not provided. The Food Shuttle works with each school system and individual schools to identify need. School officials at each site then identify students to receive BackPack Buddies. (Inter-Faith Food Shuttle). Many food agencies also have a School Pantry program that the school staff run. School Pantries help students get food before they leave school so that they can feed themselves and their families. (Inter-Faith Food Shuttle). Even Though these agencies and these programs exist this is still not enough to help people and families get food every night. We can still do alot to help these people and families get a meal each night. 19.6 percent of children in Wake county lives in food insecure homes (Food Insecurity Statistics). So what can we do to help these families get the meals they need? We can donate to these agencies. BackPack Buddies is looking for donations so that they can continue to help children across Wake county get the meals they need to survive. All these agencies need money to keep helping our community get meals. Agencies also need volunteers to deliver food to these peoples doors. You can also host a food drive or donate food to these agencies. If more people start contributing and helping, this issue will get much better and help better our community and a society as a whole. Conclusion In conclusion hunger, poverty and homelessness is big problem in wake county. By hearing about these stories and finding out information about poverty and homelessness in wake county, we think it would be best to volunteer in a food bank. First we will contact food banks and ask if we can volunteer, then we will ask teachers and staff if they can help us make it happen. If there are teachers and staff available to help us we can ask parents, students and other staff to donate. If we help the food bank we will be able to learn more about homelessness and poverty in wake county and around the world. What is most important is that we will be able to help people and make a huge difference in our community and in their lives. Another thing that we can do is listen to people's stories and learn from their experiences. If we help the food bank it might inspire other students to donate also. We want people to donate to make someone's day. Since people are dying from hunger there is a way we can help people. Hopefully one day there will be a way to prevent homelessness, poverty and hunger. Works cited <http://forsythbackpackprogram.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/charts1.png> “BTC.” NCDA. 2011-2013. There have been countless accounts of murder and suicide with the use of guns. Guns have caused nothing but death, the don't help anything and resulting to violence is not the answer. Personally I am interested in this issue because innocent people have their lives taken by trouble minded people. Gun rights need to be more strict. I find that people in the community are affected by the use of guns because it could fire out of nowhere and soon kill people whether it was an accident or not. Others should become more aware of gun laws because if they hear or see something sketchy they need to evacuate the space for their own safety. I personally think that ways to strengthen gun laws could be reporting incidents as soon as they happen, even when you are uncomfortable in a situation you should report it so that nothing bad happens. Also it shouldn't be so easy to get a gun and bullets, they should run tests and look at your record to see if they qualify to own a gun. I also think another way to help make the triangle safer is protest to get more strict gun laws. Soon then write letters and reach out to government officials and make your point. I feel after we do all of this the triangle will become a safer place to be.
This I Believe
By: Sophie Flynn I believe you should always live your life to the fullest. On October 30th 2016 I was woken up at 2:09am, with my mom telling me “get up your Dad can’t breathe, we need to take him to the emergency room.” I could feel my heart sink to my stomach. I had no clue what was going to happen to him. The next thing I know I go downstairs and I wait for my parents. I heard them coming down the stairs then I heard a thump. I get up to see what it was and i realize my dad fell down the stairs because he was too weak to walk. We soon got into the car and drove to Rex hospital. We walked in and filled out some forms to admit my dad. I could feel the nerves building up as if I was going to explode. Soon enough my dad was laying in bed resting. I saw a flow of doctors going in and out of his room. The nerves built up as time went on. The next morning after all tests had been completed we met with the doctors. They told us a lot of things about my dad. If I’m being honest the words went through one ear and out the other. My mom explained to me that his body thought that his intestines were his esophagus. We both sighed in relief. It had been a long day so mom and I drove home and went to bed. I missed my dad, the bright, fun, and happy side. Recently all I had seen was a tired, weak, and pained side. We went back to the hospital the next morning. I saw my dad and he was back to his normal self. I was bubbling over with excitement. The doctors told us he’s ready to go home. They gave him his meds and sent him off. We took him home and it was as if nothing had ever happened. We got home and we walked the dog and had dinner. Everything ended up being fine and everyone was relieved. He soon got to do the things he always wanted to do, for example run for senate, help build campaigns, and design houses. In conclusion I believe you should live your life to the fullest because you never know what’s next. My dad was lucky and recovered. But if you don’t live your life to the fullest you might regret not doing the things you always wanted to do |
