The novel “Number the Stars” is about two girls growing up in 1943, Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen are ten years old, living in Copenhagen, Denmark. Nazi Germany has taken over their country for the past three years. Life has changed a lot for the Johansens and the Rosens since the war started. German soldiers patrol every corner of Copenhagen and everyone is being careful. Germans begin closing Jewish owned businesses. Jewish people were being taken away and put into camps. In these camps they are put to work and there is little to no hospitality given to them. If you defy the rules of a Nazi you are immediately sentenced to death, no matter your reasoning. Due to the Holocaust many people are still affected by it today. Jewish people have spent years trying to rebuild their lives. Many people never met certain members of their families because they were killed in the holocaust. People who aren't Jewish struggle with coping with the fact such an evil man ever walked the earth and ever influenced so much hatred on others. (United States Memorial Holocaust Museum)

My novel is about a young girl who has to take in her best friend due to the Nazis searching for Jewish people to relocate. The struggles the family has to go through to keep Ellen Rosen a secret is a great challenge. The girls live their lives growing up staying clear of soldiers. The Nazis went after Jews wanting to kill them all. Hitler and other Nazis believed that some races are superior to others. They felt threatened by most other races. Nazis took the Jewish people away to "concentration camps" where they were kept until they died. Life was not fair there and many people tried to escape due to the lack of hospitality. Most of the Jewish tried hiding from the Nazis but most were taken away.
